JTF iMPACT Implants Project

Northern Netherlands as a hotspot for medical innovations
The Northern Netherlands, the region comprising the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, and Friesland, is rapidly developing into a key ecosystem for innovations in medical devices. These products, such as surgical instruments and orthopedic implants, are vital to many patients.

Witec Medical and the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS3)
Witec Medical, part of Witec Innovating Together, collaborates on various innovative projects in the region. Our primary goal is to contribute to the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS3). This strategy focuses on transitioning healthcare to sustainable health and aims to strengthen the Northern Netherlands by fostering a circular, social, and inclusive society.

The iMPACT Implants Project
In collaboration with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), the ENTEG Institute of the University of Groningen, and companies like Baat Medical, Bether Encapsulates, and PolyVation, we have launched the iMPACT Implants project. This project is supported by a €3.7 million grant from the Just Transition Fund (JTF), with the total project value amounting to €7.3 million.

The goal of the iMPACT Implants project is to develop a new generation of personalized implants, fully tailored to the unique needs of each patient. The project aims to create a system that enables a fast and efficient pathway from idea to product, ensuring that innovations quickly reach the patients who need them.

How does it work?
The system leverages advanced digital technologies, including 3D imaging, to integrate patient-specific data, such as bite force and walking patterns. This makes it possible to produce customized implants that perfectly match the patient’s anatomy and movements.

We ensure the highest standard of care at every stage of this process: from intake and development to production and placement in the operating room. Safety and compliance with medical device regulations are central throughout.

A new standard for personalized implants
The iMPACT Implants consortium aims to set a new standard for customized implants within the European Union. This means that personalized implant solutions will soon be available to a wider group of patients.

Support from the Just Transition Fund (JTF)
The JTF provides crucial support for the sustainable development of the Northern Netherlands. This project is co-financed by the European Union and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The grant is provided by the Northern Netherlands Cooperation (SNN), with support from the province and the municipality of Groningen.
